Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK). Oslo, Norway

The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) chose Blue Order to install a pilot and evaluation project for computer-assisted cataloguing, archiving and retrieval of television programs. Blue Order has provided consulting and software engineering services, and standard Media Archive components.

The project was split in three phases. Phase 1 of the pilot project was dedicated to a small-scale digital archiving and annotation system, using CD-ROM/DVD-ROM as storage media for MPEG-1 browse quality copies of the original television programs.

Phase 2 of the pilot project focused on the advantages of browsing video over the Local Area Network. The pilot system was designed to interface with NRK's existing SIFT database to allow federated search of metadata stored in both the Media Archive and SIFT databases using the same query interface. This system is capable of digitizing tapes as well as live feeds and provides disk and tape based mass storage for preview video and keyframes.

The encoded video stream is stored on a video and database server. This server uses a disk array and a robotic digital tape library system to store the audio and video objects. Up to 6 clients are connected to the server to provide cataloguing, retrieval and browsing functionality over the Local Area Network.

The existing SIFT database was integrated via customized interfaces. An integration of the Omnibus automation system with Media Archive in order to facilitate metadata exchange is envisioned for phase 3 of the project.

The infrastructure consists of a content management and browse server, two import/export servers, seven retrieval/cataloguing seats and one off-line editing client. The system was designed to store approximately 400 hours of browse quality video.
