EUROMEDIA (concluded) - Distributed Multimedia Archives for Cooperative TV Production: The project applied digital multimedia technologies to large-scale media archives and to media exchange between content providers' sites. The tools and standards to be developed in EUROMEDIA will make access to digital multimedia archives more effective and more efficient. EUROMEDIA results will be relevant to broadcasters, publishers, multimedia producers and service providers. For purposes of documentation and retrieval, large-scale media archives today usually employ textual descriptions of the original media objects' contents. While these textual descriptions are accessible via networked EDP systems, the media objects themselves usually are stored separately on film or tape. In order to view or use the media objects, the storage media need to be transported or telecopied. To overcome the limitations of this approach, EUROMEDIA aims at designing large-scale, digital multimedia archives accessible via local and wide area networks. For these digital multimedia archives, EUROMEDIA will provide advanced tools for video indexing, video abstracting and video sequence navigation based on image processing. These tools will be suited for professional applications in media production. EUROMEDIA not only aims at making digital media archiving and exchange technically feasible, but also at making it easier in operational and administrative terms. Therefore, EUROMEDIA aims at suggesting a set of rules for linking media objects of different types and a framework for media exchange which includes standards for rights clearing and accounting.
